Despite significant effort, the successful heterogeneous mimicking of selective CH4 oxidation performed in an enzymatic system (methane monooxygenase) is still elusive. Under mild reaction conditions, the reaction is too slow, and under harsh conditions, total oxidation prevails. Thus, of particular interest herein is the assessment of oxidation at intermediate temperatures to 1) reduce total oxidation and 2) obtain sufficient concentration of activated oxygen and CH4 species. Important operational parameters such as reaction conditions, catalyst preparation methods, and cofeeding of chemicals, which significantly affect the yield of desired products, are discussed. One particular system that is successful is the catalytic conversion of CH4 to methanol under mild conditions using nitrous oxide (N2O) with Fe-based catalysts or oxygen (O2) with Cu-based catalysts. Construction of a 33-km long sea-wall was completed in April 2006. We show that shorebird numbers at Saemangeum and two adjacent wetlands decreased by 130000 during northward migration in the next two years and that all species have declined at Saemangeum since completion of the sea-wall. Great Knots were among the most rapidly affected species. Fewer than 5000 shorebirds were recorded at Saemangeum during northward migration in 2014. We found no evidence to suggest that most shorebirds of any species displaced from Saemangeum successfully relocated to other sites in the ROK. Instead, by 2011-13 nearly all species had declined substantially in the ROK since previous national surveys in 1998 and 2008, especially at more heavily reclaimed sites. It is likely that these declines were driven by increased mortality rather than movement to alternate staging sites given that other studies have shown concurrent declines in numbers and survival on the non-breeding grounds. This is the first study in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway to confirm declines of shorebirds at a range of geographical scales following a single reclamation project. The results indicate that if migratory shorebirds are displaced from major staging sites by reclamation they are probably unable to relocate successfully to alternate sites.]]> Wed 11 Apr 2018 10:40:50 AEST ]]> Beyond the pale Australia: the studio as site where notions of Irish national identity are translated into contemporary works of art https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:12683 Wed 11 Apr 2018 10:32:13 AEST ]]> Suppression of endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced invasion and migration of breast cancer cells through the downregulation of heparanase https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:14383 Wed 11 Apr 2018 09:49:12 AEST ]]> Great expectations: migration and labour market outcomes in Australia https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:2251 Wed 11 Apr 2018 09:15:47 AEST ]]> Sustainability in tourism determined by an asymmetric game with mobility https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:52181 Wed 07 Feb 2024 15:21:07 AEDT ]]> Anti-trafficking in the time of FOSTA/SESTA: networked moral gentrification and sexual humanitarian creep https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:37738 n = 58) and key informants (n = 20) in New York and Los Angeles, we analyze FOSTA/SESTA and its harmful effects as a launchpad to more broadly explore how technology, criminalization, shifting governance arrangements, and conservative moralities cohere to exacerbate sex worker's vulnerability.]]> Wed 07 Apr 2021 11:10:58 AEST ]]> Making the Mid North Coast: a migration report https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:31914 Wed 04 Apr 2018 11:56:44 AEST ]]> Regulation of the prorenin - angiotensin system by oxygen and miRNAs; parallels between placentation and tumour development? https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:34594 Wed 02 Mar 2022 14:28:13 AEDT ]]> Displacement as Condition: A Refugee, a Farmer and the Teleology of Life https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:45969 Tue 27 Feb 2024 14:05:27 AEDT ]]> Is genetic labeling of 'risk' related to obesity contributing to resistance and fatalism in Polynesian communities? https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:16085 Tue 24 Aug 2021 14:27:51 AEST ]]> Crossing the lines: passports and borders as motifs in contemporary migration literature https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:32296 Tue 22 May 2018 14:02:01 AEST ]]> Prevalence of eating disorder is lower in migrants than in the Australian-born population https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:41959 Tue 16 Aug 2022 14:45:33 AEST ]]> Evaluation of adaptive spatial management in a multi-jurisdictional trawl fishery https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:46339 Penaeus [Melicertus] plebejus; EKP, an important penaeid species harvested across eastern Australia) that are closed to trawling (on a permanent, and temporary basis) were evaluated using a combination of trawl and tag-recapture surveys. There were significant differences in prawn size and abundance across the permanent and temporary trawl closure areas with both depth and distance to the adjacent estuarine nursery explaining these patterns, but prawns generally exceeded the minimum size-at-first-capture estimated by relevant yield per recruit models before they left areas closed to trawling. Every player is allowed to migrate between groups, and their migration decisions are governed by the risk from climate change at the current group, as well as their ability to adapt. We introduce a cooperation threshold to ensure that a minimum percentage of players cooperate before any benefit can be achieved within a group. Comprehensive simulation experiments show that migration has a positive impact on the level of cooperation, and the cooperative behaviour observed is proportional to the threshold level. Cell migration was measured in Boyden chambers. mRNA and protein expression were measured by RT-PCR and Western blotting. DCA (50-150 μM) significantly inhibited wound closure in cultured epithelial monolayers and attenuated cell migration in Boyden chamber assays. DCA also induced nuclear accumulation of the farnesoid X receptor (FXR), whereas an FXR agonist, GW4064 (10 µM), inhibited wound closure. Both DCA and GW4064 attenuated the expression of CFTR Cl⁻ channels, whereas inhibition of CFTR activity with either CFTR-inh-172 (10 μM) or GlyH-101 (25 µM) also prevented wound healing. Promoter/reporter assays revealed that FXR-induced downregulation of CFTR is mediated at the transcriptional level. In contrast, UDCA (50-150 µM) enhanced wound healing in vitro and prevented the effects of DCA. Finally, DCA inhibited and UDCA promoted mucosal healing in an in vivo mouse model. In conclusion, these studies suggest bile acids are important regulators of epithelial wound healing and are therefore good targets for development of new drugs to modulate intestinal barrier function in disease treatment. New & Noteworthy: The secondary bile acid, deoxycholic acid, inhibits colonic epithelial wound healing, an effect which appears to be mediated by activation of the nuclear bile acid receptor, FXR, with subsequent downregulation of CFTR expression and activity. In contrast, ursodeoxycholic acid promotes wound healing, suggesting it may provide an alternative approach to prevent the losses of barrier function that are associated with mucosal inflammation in IBD patients.]]> Tue 01 Oct 2019 13:39:00 AEST ]]> A comparison of physician emigration from Africa to the United States of America between 2005 and 2015 https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:34242 Thu 28 Oct 2021 12:35:29 AEDT ]]> Random-walk calculations in intermetallic compounds https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:17 Thu 25 Jul 2013 09:10:08 AEST ]]> A preliminary typology of Australian tropical rivers and implications for fish community ecology https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:187 Thu 25 Jul 2013 09:09:30 AEST ]]> Remittances, income inequality and investment in Bangladesh https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:46478 Thu 24 Nov 2022 08:50:25 AEDT ]]> Brokering sonic modernities: migrant Manila musicians in the Asia Pacific, 1881-1948 https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:44700 Thu 20 Oct 2022 10:12:50 AEDT ]]> A large-scale automated radio telemetry network for monitoring movements of terrestrial wildlife in Australia https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:38252 Thu 19 Aug 2021 11:04:32 AEST ]]> Oxygen Vacancy Defect Migration in Titanate Perovskite Surfaces: Effect of the A-Site Cations https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:43345 Thu 15 Sep 2022 15:18:43 AEST ]]> Perfluoroalkyl acid depuration from the edible tissues of a migratory recreationally fished species https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:54264 Thu 15 Feb 2024 14:31:17 AEDT ]]> Impacts of habitat repair on a spatially complex fishery https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:39933 Thu 14 Jul 2022 10:23:12 AEST ]]> Determinants and socioeconomic impacts of migration and remittances: the case of Bangladesh https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:55562 Thu 06 Jun 2024 13:58:29 AEST ]]> What drives international labour migration in the Philippines? Over 7500 prawns were tagged across multiple years in three northern NSW spatial management areas, and 786 tagged prawns were recaptured across both jurisdictions. The majority of prawns tended to be recaptured from deeper waters adjacent to, or directly north of, the spatial management areas, but tagging location and release timing influenced recapture patterns. Cohorts tagged early in the growth season showed lower recapture rates, but were larger on average at recapture, and had migrated further. Prawns reached the fishery in the adjacent jurisdiction (Qld) within 54 days-post tagging, but for most cohorts the majority of recaptures were in NSW zones. Overall, there was good connectivity between all spatial management areas and the NSW fishery, and tagged prawns also reached the Qld spawning areas. This represents an optimal scenario for NSW fishers (who forgo capture of prawns within these spatial management areas): the prawns protected in the closure areas primarily contribute to harvest of larger sized prawns within NSW waters; and a portion of the protected prawns survive to reach the southern Queensland spawning grounds, which is the primary source of recruits for northern NSW nurseries. We show that overexpression of BAALC in MCF-7 breast cancer cells increases the proliferation, anchorage-independent growth, invasion, and migration capacity of these cells. Conversely, siRNA knockdown of BAALC expression in Hs578T breast cancer cells decreases proliferation, invasion and migration. We identify that this BAALC associated migration and invasion is mediated by focal adhesion kinase (FAK)-dependent signaling and is accompanied by an increase in matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 but not MMP-2 activity in vitro.
